Complex Complex is essentially ten or fifteen minutes of reading and handful of animations. The story is divided into “parts”, signifying new days in the protagonists’ lives. The last three parts each offer one or more interactive portraits, where you may access a selection of sexual imagery. Once you complete “story mode”, you may skip to the sexual content via “Free Mode”.

There are two (fuckable) characters in the game. By clicking on their erogenous zones, you may choose from a list of sexual actions. Some of them are animated, and some of them aren’t. I loved the artwork, but I didn’t like the comic book-style interface; the images are restricted to small windows, which are layered on top of each other with a dark backdrop. There are incest themes, but it’s hard to call step-sister sex true incest. The sexual content is totally consensual, but it’s far from “wholesome”. By clicking the mouse wheel, you may cum at any time — but there is no visible cum, and orgasms simply reuse preexisting animation. I was pretty dissapointed.

The main protagonist (who is unnamed) has been transferred into a new office by his employers. Needing a new place to stay, his mother offers him a room with his step-sister and step-cousin. As he enters Airi and Nozomi’s dormitory, he finds them to be unusually friendly. By day two, they are already demanding sex — his new roomies are the best kind of family a man can have!

There’s a jazzy, laid-back tune that plays throughout the game. I didn’t like the music, but I think it’s stylistically sound. I wish there were more sound effects to keep to the application interesting. The game feels empty without moans or sexually explicit sounds.

The titlescreen is boring — it’s just a black screen with a menu. Audio and display preferences can be adjusted via “Options”. After completing a “New Game”, you’re free to use “Free Play” to review sexual animations without dialogue. The artwork cannot be fullscreened whatsoever. I enjoyed the wide variety of text and image placement, but I wish the dialogue was better centered (in relation to nearby imagery). The art style is a delight, but there aren’t enough pieces to keep the game visually interesting.

Complex Complex belongs in a bargain bin — it’s twenty minutes of mild entertainment for a buck. I don’t have much to complain about, but I wish Complex Complex offered a little more. The visual novel medium makes it easy to fluff gameplay with dialogue and erotic story telling. Sex-crazed step-siblings are a topic that owe to taboo and scandalous situations — but the characters are as one-dimensional as can be. Airi and Nozomi are as interesting as cardboard cutouts. Don’t get me wrong, they’re hot pieces of cardboard — but cardboard isn’t worth much, and neither is Complex Complex. It feels like a flash game, or a free introductory into a developer’s upcoming works. Complex Complex may be an “short, absurd game”, but the “humor” remains to be seen.
