Foreword

I was given a free copy of this game from the developers. It’s unfortunate that Calm Girls hasn’t changed since I first reviewed it on May 17th, 2020. It remains a below-average puzzle game with decent art, and a flawed gallery.

Gameplay

There are a total of twenty jigsaw puzzles to solve. As you progress, the stages will become slightly harder, by increasing the number of pieces that must be assembled. Much of the difficulty comes from the puzzle pieces being stored on-top of the puzzle area, making it difficult to see what you’re doing.

Story

There is no story (and I’m not making one up).

Visuals

I loved the titlescreen — the artwork was great, and the interface easy to read. However, I would liked to have seen some movement. The hearts are begging to to be animated. From “Config”, you can adjust display and sound preferences. Your sound preferences will reset in-game, effectively negating the usefulness of the “Config” menu. If you want to mute the game, you’ll have to do so externally. You can review completed puzzles from the “CG” menu, which serves as a gallery. All (but one) CG can be fullscreened, but the user-interface cannot be hidden.

Can we please have the option to hide the user-interface, developers?

The Goods

There are twenty (animated) CGs to unlock. There are a mixture of interactive and non-interactive scenes. The interactive scenes are. . . extremely poor. You press a button, which plasters decals on-screen, and increases a heart meter. As the meter fills, the worse money shots I’ve ever seen will be splattered on-screen. I think that the interactive scenes need to be dramatically improved, starting with the removal of the stupid decals. That aside, the artwork looks alright, and the animations decent.

Verdict

I don’t recommend this game. As this title lacks the most basic of features you’d expect in a jigsaw puzzle (from a gallery to turning off sound), I’m going to give this game a thumbs down. Unless you specifically need a pixel aesthetic, I would look elsewhere for your jigsaw fix.
